The Romanian off-road vehicle manufacturer ARO began its activity in 1957. The first model was the IMS 57, whose number unequivocally hinted at the year of release. The prototype, or rather the base for it, was the Soviet GAZ 69. Unlike the latter, the Romanian car was equipped with a weaker engine, the production of which was established even before the war years. The company's engineers did not "sit idly by". And after a couple of years, an upgraded version appeared under the number M59. It had a more modern engine installed. Other additions include electric windshield wipers and a number of modifications to the suspension. The next modification was the pinnacle of development of this IMS 461 model, which already had a 2.5-liter engine under the hood, capable of accelerating the car to 100 km/h. Notably, it was this model that began to leave the country and be supplied to Colombia and China.

Success of the 70s

In 1969, a new model was introduced - the ARO 24. This was already an off-road vehicle of its own design, which stood out with several features. Firstly, the combination of comfort when driving at high speeds on asphalt (max. speed up to 120 km/h) and high passability off-road. Achieving these indicators was made possible by the competent implementation of a frame structure, independent suspension, and connectable all-wheel drive. Secondly, the car consumed about 14 liters per 100 km, which was quite acceptable for those times. To this, it is worth adding that its cost was significantly lower than that of analogs with the same characteristics. Therefore, the "24" quickly gained popularity, including in the military industry. The only drawback was the weak engine, which was later replaced with analogs from manufacturers such as Toyota, Peugeot, and Chrysler.

The next stage of development

Trying to expand the range of products, the company released a compact off-road vehicle ARO 10. The car turned out to be not so successful, but still managed to gain popularity far beyond the country. And its main advantage was the ratio of functionality and price. Since the closest competitors in this class, namely Japanese manufacturers, offered more expensive options.

The final of the story

Despite its successful activities, the company failed to withstand the competition from larger players. As soon as most automakers joined the race for the best frame off-road vehicle, ARO began to lag significantly behind. As a result, 2006 was marked by the company's bankruptcy. Nevertheless, it made a significant contribution to the automotive industry, having produced more than 380,000 units. Notably, some of them can still be found on modern roads.
