Swedish NIRA Dynamics has developed a tire wear monitoring system
The Swedish company NIRA Dynamics, a developer of automotive software, has introduced the TWI (Tread Wear Indicator) system, which provides real-time monitoring of tire wear and thus provides drivers and fleet operators with critical information about the condition of the tires.
According to NIRA, the automotive industry is currently transitioning from traditional maintenance, performed at fixed intervals, to continuous monitoring of various parameters, and tire wear directly affects the level of safety, fuel efficiency, and damage to the environment.
NIRA does not specify the operating principle of the new development and only notes that it "does not require the installation of additional expensive equipment and uses sensors already installed on the vehicle, which reduces the cost of the product and eliminates the need for maintenance".

Reduced tread depth increases braking distances and worsens handling on wet and icy roads, and the new software will alert the driver in advance that the tire needs to be replaced, i.e., the wear level will not reach a critical level. At the same time, fleet managers can more efficiently plan vehicle maintenance and avoid unexpected downtime. Additionally, since tire replacement is only done as needed, waste is reduced and environmental damage is minimized.

"This is just the beginning," emphasized Lisa Ohm, NIRA's CEO. "Our team intends to improve and expand the capabilities of TWI to ensure that every driver, fleet operator, or vehicle manufacturer has reliable access to important data in real-time, making transportation safer and more environmentally friendly."
