Tires that are not afraid of punctures
It is obvious that the request for getting rid of the spare wheel in a car is a priority for automakers, and those tire manufacturers that can provide this solution will get the green light for initial vehicle equipment. As we already mentioned in the previous publication, the technology of self-supporting tires is not without its drawbacks, so there is another elegant solution to continue driving in the event of a puncture - a sealing layer on the inside of the tread.
Tires with sealant technology have a special sealant coating inside the tire that can automatically seal punctures caused by sharp objects such as nails, screws, or glass. The principle of operation of such tires is based on the use of a viscous sealant located inside the tire, which, when in contact with a puncture, fills it and prevents air leakage. The viscosity and elasticity of the sealant allow it to form an impermeable plug inside the puncture, preventing air leakage and maintaining pressure in the tire.
Tires with sealant technology are usually able to seal multiple punctures, providing a temporary solution until the puncture is repaired or replaced by a specialist. This can be especially useful in the case of small punctures when it is not possible to stop immediately and replace the tire.
But like any technology, there are its own nuances here. The main feature, of course, is that only the tread is protected from damage, and therefore, the sidewalls of the tire remain unprotected from punctures and pinching by the rim. There are also limitations on the size of punctures. The sealant inside really works flawlessly and can instantly seal dozens of punctures, but they should not be larger than 5 mm. Accordingly, if you drive over a sharp stone, which is also common, then the sealant will not help either.
Despite the fact that this technology has its drawbacks, some automakers still hastened to get rid of the spare wheel, considering that tires with sealant are quite enough for safe driving. Be careful and check the spare wheel when buying a new car).
Tires with this technology have a special marking on the sidewall, and since this is not a regulated and voluntary technology, the names are different for everyone.
For example:
* Goodyear - Seal tech technology
* Michelin - Selfseal
* Pirelli - Seal Inside
* Continental - ContiSeal
