Actual resource of winter tires

The resource is one of the key parameters that car owners keep in mind when choosing tires. What is it like for winter tires? Despite the fact that we wrote about the fact that studded tires, even with a complete loss of studs, do not cease to be tires, we also want to emphasize that the tire's resource should not be predicted until the 4 mm indicator. The actual service life of the tire is less.

Compared to summer tires, winter tires are placed in much more difficult working conditions. At the same time, it is worth considering that winter tires should always maintain a sufficient share of negative tread profile to overcome deep snow (link).

Also, do not forget that on the roads, especially in large cities, road reagent is used and in fact, there is constantly a lot of water on the roads that the tread should evacuate from the contact patch. Winter tires cope with aquaplaning quite successfully up to 4 mm indicators, but with snow, many tires experience difficulties already at 6 mm.

Given that most winter tires have an initial tread depth of 9 mm, only 3 mm remains for successful operation in snow, which is 60% of the entire resource up to the winter wear indicator of 4 mm. It is here that the difference between expensive and budget tires often manifests itself. It is the premium brands that often possess complex rubber compounds that wear out less intensively.

Pay attention to the remaining tread depth of your tires. Especially during the winter period.
