Why are tires tested on perfect ice?
Sometimes, when opening another test, many car owners note with noticeable irritation that it was again conducted on the clean ice of Lake Baikal or on covered grounds where the ice quality is ideal. Indeed, this is true, but why do journalists do this? After all, there is virtually no chance of encountering such ice on the roads.
We spoke with one of the experienced pilots who has extensive experience in testing winter tires. He noted that recreating real road conditions is almost impossible. Anti-icing agents, windshield washer fluid, sand, salt - these components in different proportions make dozens of types of ice in terms of density and properties. For this reason, it is important to show car owners the difference on the cleanest ice without any impurities, in order to show the characteristics of the tires in their pure form.
Regarding the comparability of characteristics with real conditions, it is worth paying attention to the results of the tire on other coatings that are also present in the tests, in particular, the characteristics on dry and wet surfaces.
