Review of the new line of winter light truck tires Ikon

In 2026, Ikon Tyres is introducing four new models of winter light truck tires to the market, all of which were developed by the company's own research center, meaning the design was not copied from Nokian products, as was the case before. In the premium segment, three new products are presented: studded Ikon Autograph Ice C4 and Ikon Autograph Ice LT4, as well as the friction Ikon Autograph Snow C4, while the Ikon Character Ice C2 tire with studs belongs to the mid-price sector and will join the previously introduced summer Ikon Character Eco C2, which was also developed by the company itself.

Ikon says that the development of the portfolio in various segments is a strategic step, and the company "is betting on innovation and technological independence to meet the domestic demand of the Russian market and expand its presence internationally".

According to the manufacturer's estimates, in Russia, the release of new light truck tires will allow closing a significant part of the demand for this type of product from private owners and vehicle fleets - more than 55%. According to Ikon, as of January 1, 2026, the number of registered light trucks in Russia exceeded 4.2 million, with over 40% accounted for by the GAZ brand, followed by UAZ (14%), and the top ten also includes Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Lada, Nissan, Hyundai, and Izh, with the majority of vehicles produced in 2006-2008.

"Ikon tires are a response to the current requests of light truck owners and drivers who need reliability, efficiency, predictability, and control in any weather," said Vladimir Barvinok, Ikon's Product Development Director. "We have taken a comprehensive approach, where each technology - from the rubber compound to the tread pattern - works towards a common goal: maximum safety and economic efficiency".

The premium Ikon Autograph Ice C4 tire is designed to provide high grip in winter conditions and improve fuel efficiency by reducing rolling resistance, and for this purpose, a special two-component tread construction was developed. The tire also features a directional tread pattern with expanding grooves that accelerate water evacuation and reduce the risk of aquaplaning, as well as improving traction on surfaces covered with snow slush or crushed ice. In addition, the unidirectional lamellas enhance grip by holding snow, while the large number of edges "biting" into the ice increases safety in complex conditions.

In the central zone, reinforced blocks are placed, which, in combination with half-arches in the shoulder sections, increase the stiffness of the tread, improving stability during braking, acceleration, and maneuvering.

The steel studs have a four-sided shape and a wide base, and their design, according to Ikon, was developed to increase traction and more reliably hold the studs in the tread, while the increased corrosion resistance of the material used allows the studs to continue working effectively when exposed to reagents, and their placement scheme was optimized to improve both safety and acoustic comfort.

The developers also worked on the hermetic layer recipe, reducing its air permeability, which allows maintaining the optimal pressure level for a longer period, including under heavy loads. This increases the overall strength of the construction, improves the evenness of tread wear, and extends the life of the tires. The technology is called Air Matrix and is used in the production of all tires from the new line.

Autograph Ice C4 will be produced in 14 sizes from 195/70 R15C to 215/60 R17C.

While the Ice C4 will be available in sizes with the C marking, the Ikon Autograph Ice LT4 model will be produced in LT sizes, and products of both types are designed for light trucks, but the first category is more often used in commercial vehicle fleets, including those used for passenger transportation, and the second may have an additionally reinforced construction, making them an optimal choice for transporting heavy loads, including off-road, and in this segment, there is usually no pronounced emphasis on reducing rolling resistance.

Autograph Ice LT4 also features a directional tread pattern, while the special rubber compound with increased wear resistance reduces the likelihood of cuts, punctures, and tears, and in combination with the increased tread depth, extends the service life of the tires. In addition, the shape of the shoulder grooves has been redesigned to increase the stiffness of the tread and the carrying capacity, and gravel clamps are placed on the sidewalls, improving passability in deep snow, and Ikon says that the tires can confidently exit a snowbank or rut.

The studs have a Y-shaped design and are made of stainless steel, and the manufacturer claims that they have "exceptional corrosion resistance even when exposed to aggressive reagents and salts". This should maintain a stable level of traction on ice and compacted snow throughout the life of the tires, and special attention was also paid to the durability of the stud fixation in the tread.

The line will include four sizes: LT 225/75 R16, LT 245/75 R16, LT 265/75 R16, and LT 265/70 R16.

The Ikon Autograph Snow C4 presented in the friction segment features a V-shaped tread pattern with intersecting grooves designed to quickly evacuate water and slush to reduce the risk of aquaplaning and slushplaning, while the massive solid rib in the central section improves directional stability.

Natural oils were added to the rubber compound, which act as plasticizers and allow the tires to maintain elasticity in frosty weather, stabilizing the contact patch and increasing the level of traction, and Ikon emphasizes that flexibility is provided without compromising strength. In addition, to improve safety on ice and compacted snow, the tires are equipped with a large number of sharp traction edges, and the lamellas have a wavy shape, increasing the stiffness of the blocks and the accuracy of steering.

The tires will be produced in 12 sizes from 195/70 R15C to 235/65 R16C.

For the studded Ikon Character Ice C2 tires in the mid-price segment, a tread pattern was developed that, according to the manufacturer, simultaneously improves both safety - due to the numerous traction edges - and comfort - thanks to the rounded shapes of the elements, which suppress vibrations and reduce the noise level in the cabin.

The rubber compound has an increased proportion of natural rubber and oils, which, as indicated by the company, provides a balance between the elasticity required for effective operation in frost and resistance to damage, while the carbide studs and the developed lamella system increase the efficiency of braking and acceleration on icy roads.

Character Ice C2 will be released in nine sizes from 155R13C to 235/65 R16C.
