The seasonal ban on summer tires has come into effect

On December 1, Russia introduced a ban on the use of summer tires on passenger and light commercial vehicles for the third time, which will be in effect until the end of February. During this period, only winter tires marked with M+S (M&S, M S) and the symbol of a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake (3PMSF) are allowed to be used.

Winter tires must be installed on all axles of the vehicle, and this also applies to studded tires if they are used. The tread depth must be at least 4 mm, and the use of tires with worn-out tread to at least one wear indicator (if present) is also prohibited.

In case of violation, the driver may receive a warning, and a fine of 500 rubles is also provided, although in 2023, the head of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, Mikhail Chernikov, stated that inspectors "will not fine or punish anyone".

"Every vehicle owner must prepare their car themselves to be able to safely travel on the roads in certain winter conditions," he said.
