Goodyear introduced a tire made up of 70% environmentally friendly materials
At Goodyear, the company announced the release of a demonstration tire made using 70% sustainable materials.
The tire consists of 13 ingredients from nine different components, including three types of carbon black that were derived from methane, carbon dioxide, and plant-based oil instead of burning various petroleum products. They were used to reinforce the composition and increase the tire's lifespan.
Another innovation is the use of soybean oil to maintain the elasticity of the tire's rubber compound when the temperature changes, and since it's a biobased product, it reduces the tire manufacturer's use of alternative petroleum products. In addition to soybean oil, the tire uses silica derived from rice husk ash. This byproduct of rice processing is typically discarded in landfills, but it was used to produce high-quality silica to improve traction and reduce fuel consumption.
Finally, the polyester was produced from recycled plastic waste by converting polyester back into its base chemicals. It is then reformed and used to produce technical-grade polyether for use in tire cords.
Goodyear says the performance metrics indicate that the components provide high overall tire performance. This tire is a significant step forward for the company as it strives to achieve its goal of producing tires made from 100% sustainable materials by 2030.
